A Rare Green Glass Handi Lamp - 19thC Unwired.
These glass lamps are known in India as Handis or Hundis named after a cooking pot. Rather surprisingly they are not Indian, but European in origin. They were exported to India as lighting for large homes and palaces in the 19th Century.
Candles or oil lamps were placed inside the glass bell and the glass lid prevented soot from marking the ceiling of the palace or the tent. Many survived on the tall ceilings unlike their European counterparts which were taken down and smashed when electricity arrived. Our antique handis are mostly 19th or early 20th century.
Please note that this is hand blown old glass and may have small imperfections and some small scratches, but it is not surprising for glass that has survived around100yrs.
The height could be a little less with chain links removed.
Most Handis can be wired at extra cost with a 3 way or single fitting and brass ceiling hooks can also be supplied if required. Please contact us directly via the link.
We also stock reproduction handis which are made in India.
